READING SUPPORT AND INTERVENTION
Classroom teachers provide ongoing adjustments and support for students in their classroom who are not able to access the age-appropriate curriculum.
In addition to this, the school has in place two reading intervention programs, where year one to three students are withdrawn from the classroom and work in small groups with a dedicated Education Assistant to improve specific reading skills.
Parents will be notified if students are attending one of our Reading Intervention programs.
MiniLit Program
MiniLit is an evidence-based, explicit and effective early literacy intervention program for teaching reading skills to children who are in the bottom 25% of the expected range for their age group in Year 1 or 2.
MiniLit stands for ‘Meeting Initial Needs In Literacy’ and is an early literacy intervention program. It is delivered to identified students that require additional support in Literacy development. It is for students that have not made adequate progress in learning to read in Year 1 and Year 2.
Students who score in the bottom 25th percentile of the Diebels oral reading fluency test will undertake the Minilit placement test. If students are deemed the right fit for the program they will attend three, 60 minute sessions a week.
Selected Year 2 students participate in the program throughout the year. Year 1 students are considered for their suitability in semester 2, when they've had the opportunity to first learn to read through explicit classroom instruction.
MiniLit focuses on teaching the basics of letter/sound knowledge and decoding skills for CVC words and extending word attack knowledge by teaching commonly used digraphs and longer words.
Each Lesson will then comprise of;
- Sound and Word activities,
- Text reading, and
- Story Book reading.
Reading Decoding Intervention Program
Our Reading decoding program includes blending, segmenting, spelling, comprehension, and reading games with one spelling for each phoneme. We currently utilise Dandelion Readers in this program.
For students where MiniLit is not the correct fit, they may complete the Decoding intervention.
Students who are very low in the Diebels Oral Rading Fluency Assessment and are at the decoding phase of reading are considered for the program. Students will be tested and work through a workbook targeting their decoding and sound knowledge.
MaqLit Program
MaqLit is an evidence-based, explicit and effective early literacy intervention program for teaching reading skills to children who are in the bottom 25% of the expected range for their age group in Year 3 to 6.
MaqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of older low-progress readers. It provides a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Our year 3-6 students who score in the bottom 25th percentile of the Diebels oral reading fluency test will undertake the Minilit placement test. If students are deemed the right fit for the program they will attend four, 60 minute sessions a week.
