In the Languages learning area, students learn languages other than English. At Piara Waters Primary School, the chosen language is French.
All students in Years 3 to 6 learn French for one hour a week with a Specialist Teacher. In 2023, we also have a French Language Assistant to support our program.
There are many advantages to learning a second language, these include:
- The development of a multicultural mindset.
- An appreciation for diversity and the development of an intercultural capability.
- Strengthening of students’ intellectual, analytical, and reflective capabilities and enhancement of their creative and critical thinking skills.
- Extending students’ literacy repertoires.
- Developing students’ intercultural understanding and sense of identity.
- Understanding of the role of language and culture in human communication.
- Boosting creativity and self-confidence.
- Supporting and improving first-language acquisition and development; and
- Preparing students for life in our current global community, amongst others.
Our French as a Second Language Program is also delivered using latest technologies for languages education. Families are encouraged to support their children in the use of Seesaw at home and on www.languagenut.com (Login details will be given during French classes) for in-between lessons, so that classroom time can be fully utilised for speaking and writing in French.
At Piara Waters Primary School, interested Years 5 to 6 students can join the French Club. This occurs on Wednesdays, after school in the Science Room, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm when students extend their language skills through engaging activities such as singing, playing games, watching films, performing, sampling French culinary specialities and preparing for a range of competitions.
